Fall 2006

To Our Readers

The probability is high that shortages of two key resources— energy and water—will dominate the twenty-first century.  This issue of Explorations is dedicated to the concept of sustainable development and features faculty members from a wide range of University units who are developing new ways to conserve the energy resources we currently have.  Whether in the sciences, in engineering, in architecture and planning, or in business, what is remarkable about all of their projects is that they move back and forth between basic science and technology development and policy, with the need for resource conservation stimulating very exciting and innovative research.  Projects such as these demonstrate how university research can help close the gap between the laboratory and energy security and contribute to our economic development as well.

The University of Virginia strives to stay in the forefront in these research initiatives and encourages your support of them.
